Relaxation and Recovery in Hydrogel Friction on Smooth Surfaces

چکیده

Hydrogels are crosslinked polymer networks that can absorb and retain a large fraction of liquid. Near critical sliding velocity, hydrogels pressed against smooth surfaces exhibit time-dependent frictional behavior occurring over multiple timescales. The origin these dynamics is unresolved Here, we characterize this regime show it consistent with two distinct molecular processes: sliding-induced relaxation quiescent recovery. Our experiments use custom pin-on-disk tribometer to examine poly(acrylic acid) on poly(methyl methacrylate) variety conditions, from minutes hours. We at fixed the friction coefficient decays exponentially reaches steady-state value. time constant associated decay varies sensitive any precedent shearing interface. This process reversible; upon cessation sliding, recovers its original state. also initial direction shear be imprinted as an observable “memory”, visible after 24 hrs repeated shearing. attribute nanoscale extension near-surface network, leading model recovery parallel

Probing Molecular Relaxation on Polymer Surfaces with Friction Force Microscopy

The scan-velocity dependence of friction force microscopy (FFM) is characterized on gelatin films and related to the rate dependence of molecular relaxations. For selected scanning-parameter values the velocity dependence of frictional force is affected by the measurement process, because of energy imparted to the tip-sample contact region: a peak in the friction-velocity relationship, attribut...

Stick-slip friction of gecko-mimetic flaps on smooth and rough surfaces.

The discovery and understanding of gecko 'frictional-adhesion' adhering and climbing mechanism has allowed researchers to mimic and create gecko-inspired adhesives. A few experimental and theoretical approaches have been taken to understand the effect of surface roughness on synthetic adhesive performance, and the implications of stick-slip friction during shearing. This work extends previous s...

Stereoscopic recovery and description of smooth textured surfaces

We describe a stereo algorithm, called Needles, specialised to deal with smooth textured surfaces. Constraints of local surface smoothness and global surface continuity are used to solve the correspondence problem. The algorithm is edge based. First the left image is divided into square patches, and a disparity histogram of the potential edge matches is constructed in each patch. Above-threshol...

Wetting and friction on superoleophobic surfaces

This article describes the physics of superoleophobic surfaces, combining a recently developed free-energy approach and finite element modeling. We start by investigating the peculiar wetting behavior of such surfaces, originating in their “re-entrant” geometry, and discussing a specific mechanism for the “filling transition”, leading to the loss of superoleophobicity. We then focus on their fr...

Ab-initio tensorial electronic friction for molecules on metal surfaces: nonadiabatic vibrational relaxation

Molecular adsorbates on metal surfaces exchange energy with substrate phonons and low-lying electron-hole pair excitations. In the limit of weak coupling, electron-hole pair excitations can be seen as exerting frictional forces on adsorbates that enhance energy transfer and facilitate vibrational relaxation or hot-electron mediated chemistry. We have recently reported on the relevance of tensor...
